The Control Problem
A fan motor in a building services unit is judged by how it sounds and how much it costs to run, not by how fast it spins. Both of those are decided on the drive board. Commutation has to be smooth enough that nobody hears a tone from the ceiling diffuser, the speed has to hold steady at the low end where the fan is barely moving air, and the whole chain has to stay efficient across a range that may run from a few hundred to well over a thousand rpm. That is why the shaded-pole and permanent-split-capacitor motors that used to sit behind these fans are steadily being replaced by BLDC and EC motors driven by a three-phase inverter - and why the board behind that inverter has become the part that determines whether a unit feels premium or cheap.
Build and Test
The build itself mixes fine-pitch microcontroller and gate-driver packages with power devices that need real thermal contact. SMT runs first, with solder paste inspected before each lot and reflow profiles tuned per board thickness and copper load; the heavier through-hole terminals and connectors follow by selective or hand soldering. AOI covers every board with X-Ray on the driver and sensorless-sampling areas, where a marginal joint shows up later as a commutation fault rather than an obvious open. Functional testing is where these boards are proven: hall or back-EMF signals are simulated to confirm the drive responds correctly, and where the customer supplies a motor, boards are spun at no load and at rated load on a fixture to check current draw, speed accuracy, and thermal rise. Insulation resistance and dielectric withstand testing are available for units where the motor winding and the board share an enclosure.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can you supply a drop-in replacement for a specific fan motor?
No. These are project examples. Each board is produced from the customer's own files, so there is no catalogue part to match against.
2. We already have the control firmware - can you build only the power stage?
Yes. Power stage only, control section only, or the complete board are all normal scopes.
3. Do you support both hall-sensor and sensorless motor designs?
Both. The sensing arrangement follows the customer's firmware expectation rather than a house preference.
4. Can the board be tested with our motor before it ships?
Yes, when a sample motor is supplied. Boards can be spun at no load and at rated load to verify current, speed, and thermal rise.
5. Do you fit the heatsink and thermal interface?
Yes. Heatsink assembly, thermal pad or paste application, and pressing can be included so the board arrives ready to mount.
6. What information do you need for a quotation?
Gerber (RS-274X), BOM with manufacturer part numbers, estimated volume, plus the motor's rated power, speed range, and feedback type if available.
